Traditionally Designed
The first "horse brasses" dating back to early Christianity were used as lucky charms, worn on livestock when superstition played an important part of man's everyday beliefs. Protecting him and his most valuable possessions, his livestock from evil spirits.
In times of battle, they were used as protective armor covering vital organs on great war horses. These brasses are directly styled from one such armor protecting the kidneys and are called the kidney drop today, still found on modern harness.
In most recent times starting around the mid 18th century, the "brass" was given out as a reward won instead of trophies at rural fairs, events, and ploughing contests. The proud farmer would then attach these to his harness, displaying them throughout the year wherever he went. Horse brasses today are very sought after and collected.
The Heavy Horse Shoppe has been custom making these pieces of history for modern events and fairs throughout the United States and Canada since 1988. They are individually cast in sand at a local foundry here in Wisconsin, and then laboriously hand polished, just as they were traditionally made.
